A sump pump moves collected water out of a sump basin, often in a basement or crawl space. When the water reaches a set level, the pump turns on and sends it through a discharge line away from the area it protects.
What to check
The basin, pump, power supply, float switch, and discharge route all affect whether the system can operate when needed. A backup option may be useful where a power outage or pump failure would cause serious water damage. Periodic checks help reveal a blocked line or a pump that does not start.
