A garbage disposal that hums without grinding may have a jammed grinding mechanism, although a motor problem can produce a similar symptom. Switch it off immediately rather than leaving it humming or repeatedly trying to restart it.
The sound does not automatically mean you need a replacement. The next step is to distinguish a removable jam from a failed component or a separate drainage problem.
Turn the power off before checking anything
The wall switch being off is not enough protection before attempting a jam-clearing procedure. Turn off the disposal and disconnect its electrical power using the method specified in the manufacturer’s instructions before attempting to clear a jam. If you cannot safely identify or isolate the power supply, stop and contact a qualified professional. Never handle a plug or electrical connection while standing in water or near wet electrical components.
Never put your fingers or hands inside the grinding chamber, even when power is disconnected.
Once the unit is safely isolated, use a flashlight to check for an object near the opening. Only attempt to retrieve a visible, safely accessible object with suitable tongs or pliers if the manufacturer’s instructions permit it. Do not reach into the chamber or force an object loose.
Stop troubleshooting if you notice a burning smell, damaged wiring, or water near an electrical connection. For a suspected wiring or power-supply issue, contact a qualified electrician.
Follow the instructions for your particular model
Some disposals have a manufacturer-provided wrench socket underneath the unit. Others use a different method to release a jam.
Use only the procedure and tool specified for your disposal. Do not assume an online demonstration applies to every model, and do not force a mechanism that will not move.
A reset button addresses an overload shutdown; it does not remove the object or condition that caused the shutdown. Follow the manual’s cooling and reset instructions only after the obstruction has been addressed.
If the disposal continues humming or trips again, stop. Repeated resets are not a repair and can leave the underlying fault unresolved.
A spinning disposal can still have a blocked drain
Grinding and drainage are separate functions. A disposal can run normally while water remains in the sink because its outlet or the downstream drain is restricted.
In a double-bowl sink, water moving into the other bowl can also indicate trouble in the shared drainage path.
Describe both symptoms when requesting help: whether the unit grinds and whether the sink empties. Replacing a working disposal will not necessarily fix a downstream blockage.
Avoid putting chemical drain openers into the disposal. Once it is working properly, follow its instructions for suitable food scraps and water use. Never pour cooking grease into it.

Frequently asked questions
Does humming mean the motor has burned out?
Not necessarily. A jam can prevent movement while the motor receives power. The cause needs to be identified before replacing the unit.
Should I press the reset button first?
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. A reset will not release a jam, so repeatedly pressing it is not a useful workaround.
Can I use hot water to clear the jam?
Water does not remove a trapped object or repair a motor. Do not keep running a disposal that hums without grinding.
Why does my sink stay full when the disposal runs?
The drain beyond the disposal may be blocked. The unit’s operation and the sink’s drainage need separate checks.
